Press release: 30 August 2006

This Summer, for the first time, the artist Paddy Hamilton has opened his studios to the public at Dungeness in Kent. The work is displayed in two small atmospheric sheds - The interiors of both buildings have been altered to create a sense of sanctuary, peace and respite. They are ideal for showing and viewing creative work.

Studio 1 is an ex-winch shed situated until recently on Greatstone beach - now used for printing and exhibiting small prints - mostly linocuts. Studio 2 is the larger building - this space is used to show paintings.

In January 2006 Paddy Hamilton launched his own on line gallery for selling paintings http://www.paintings-for-sale.net/. Work that can be seen at Dungeness open Studios can be bought on line.

Paddy Hamilton has lived at Dungeness for eight years - "Dungeness attracts a great number of visitors, many come back year after year. First time visitors are often bowled over by the strangeness of the landscape, the open skies and the unfamiliar, desert-like appearance. It's a place you immediately fall in love with - or feel and immediate aversion to. I love it here because I was born and brought up in Africa, the beach is very similar to the Kalahari desert at certain times of the year."

In Africa the boundaries between art and craft blur. Making art is an everyday activity carried out by the majority.

"My approach to painting, drawing, printmaking and commissioned work embraces an earthy conceptualism. The intention is always to avoid the unnecessary and make work without complication or the need for lengthy explanation."
